Crosscurrents: Rome, Amalfi Coast, and Naples

Travel with Colorado College Alumni, Family, and Friends

October 18-31, 2025 (14 days) with Professor Emerita Susan Ashley

Dear Colorado College alumni and friends,

I invite you to join Dr. Susan Ashley, Professor Emerita of History, who will introduce you to the secular and religious histories of this diverse and extraordinary region of Italy. You will see and learn about the ways distinctly different cultures intersected in ancient times, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance and Baroque periods. You will also examine how these strands and layers of the past still shape the present.

Explore ancient sites such as the Colosseum, Pompeii, and Paestum. Visit ancient temples and Christian churches, including the Pantheon and St. Peter’s Basilica. Admire public and private art in the Vatican Museums and Naples Archaeological Museum, as well as in churches and in unexpected places. You will also have the option to hike to the crater of Mt. Vesuvius and along the Sorrento Peninsula’s “Path of the Gods.”

What you will see and learn with Professor Ashley will make this an unforgettable immersion into the diverse cultural heritage of this Mediterranean-bordering area of central Italy. Professor Ashley will be joined by an expert tour manager/guide and local guides. Enjoy a total of 12 nights at well-located, 4-star hotels: six nights in the center of Rome; three nights along the beautiful Amalfi Coast; and three nights in Naples, right on the shore of the Gulf of Naples. Delicious meals, featuring many regional specialties, are included.

This trip is limited to 18 travelers so, if you are enticed, you should reserve your spot immediately by contacting Eos Study Tours, the specialty tour operator who has worked so closely with Professor Ashley in designing this trip.

Sincerely,

Cindy Hyman ’82
Associate Vice President for Engagement

Colorado College Faculty Leader

Susan AshleySusan Ashley is a beloved Colorado College Professor Emerita of History. She has led several student and faculty trips to Italy and has designed this special itinerary for alumni, family, and friends of the college. Professor Ashley arrived at CC in 1970 after graduating from Carleton College and then earning a M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. She chaired the History Department at CC twice and served as Dean of the College and Dean of the Faculty from 2005 - 2012. Professor Ashley also directed the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Florence and London-Florence programs three times.

“We’ll explore Rome, Naples, and Amalfi, three cities located along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. All three register two and a half millennia of cultural conflict and connection as soldiers, merchants, scholars, and pilgrims carried their worlds of difference from place to place across the Mediterranean. All three cities commanded influence. Each one both absorbed outside practices and imposed their own on others. We’ll see striking evidence of the resulting mix of cultures in the layout of streets, in architecture and art, and in museums and monuments. And as we look, we’ll recognize the origins and improbable persistence of the features that now define ‘the West.’ Along the way, we’ll take in some spectacular views (Vesuvius, anyone?), do justice to local food and wine, and enjoy the company of fellow CCers.”
